Frequently Asked Questions
What is the relationship between Peninsula Habitat for Humanity and Habitat for Humanity International?
Contrary to popular belief, Habitat houses are built by local, independent affiliates, like Peninsula Habitat for Humanity, in communities throughout the world.
As an independent nonprofit, all aspects of Peninsula Habitat's building projects including fundraising, site selection, family selection and support, volunteer recruitment, construction and mortgage servicing are coordinated locally. Whereas Habitat for Humanity International is responsible for providing information, training and a variety of other support services and resources to Peninsula Habitat and other Habitat affiliates worldwide.
In keeping with its original mission, Habitat for Humanity International also asks affiliates to "tithe" - to give a portion of every donation to provide much-needed funds for international home building. This way Peninsula Habitat's supporters can serve both their local and international communities at the same time. To date, Peninsula Habitat's tithes from generous donor contributions have resulted in the construction of more than 100 homes internationally.
Is Peninsula Habitat a Christian organization?
While not directly linked with any specific faith organization, Peninsula Habitat's mission is based on Christian principles witnessing the love and teachings of Jesus Christ. However, we partner with all people regardless of their faith affiliations.
Who are the families that Peninsula Habitat serves?
Peninsula Habitat works with families who earn a minimum of $40,000 in annual income and can often only afford overcrowded or substandard housing. They often work in service industries, move frequently, and can't afford to live where they work.
Peninsula Habitat provides these hard-working, low-income families with an opportunity to break the cycle of poverty through our affordable homeownership program. We offer families an opportunity to own their own home in the cities where they work and create a better future.

How many families has Peninsula Habitat helped?
In 18 years, we've empowered more than 100 Peninsula families to become homeowners. We've built 100 homes, and turned eight homes over to new Habitat families after the original Habitat homeowners moved on to purchase market rate homes.
