Completed Projects
Gloria Way, East Palo Alto
Description:
- 24-unit condominium complex
- Four two and three story buildings
- Each building includes four two-bedroom, 16 three-bedroom and four four-bedroom units
- Each unit has a separate one-car garage and one dedicated, outdoor parking space
- Gloria Way Community Housing shares the 3.3-acre site with 38 affordable rental units built by Mid-Peninsula Housing Coalition
Construction Timeframe: October 1995 to February 1998
Land Donor: The land, which was subdivided into two parcels, was acquired in partnership with Mid-Peninsula Housing Coalition; the government sold the land at 1970s prices.
Before Peninsula Habitat: The land on which the Gloria Way development was built had many mature oak trees, but no housing units. As part of Peninsula Habitat's "green building" efforts, the 24-unit development was designed around existing, healthy trees that still stand today.
Today: Gloria Way Community Housing has served as a model for many other U.S. Habitat for Humanity affiliates due to its size, architectural complexity and the fact that it was produced primarily by the use of volunteer labor. This development represents the largest effort in East Palo Alto to provide the stability and security of ownership housing for families with low incomes.
Community Support: More than 6,000 community volunteers contributed 90,000 hours to build the Gloria Way complex, along with the 24 partner families, who worked more then 12,000 hours
House Partners:
- Major support from Valley Presbyterian, Trinity Episcopal and Menlo Park Presbyterian Churches
- Corporations: Rudolph and Sletten; Webcor
- Foundations: Peninsula Community Foundation
- Hundreds of people throughout San Mateo County
