Brisbane's History Makes City Ideal Partner for Habitat Build

In 1929, the stock market crashed and Arthur Annis came to town. Affectionately referred to as the "Daddy of Brisbane," Annis helped develop the area and give Brisbane its name.*

As the Depression lingered, settlers flocked to the small town in search of cheap land and the promise of a better future for their families. "Many of Brisbane's pioneer residents built their homes with their own hands and the help of neighbors - representing the true community spirit which has prevailed ever since," said Arthur Gledhill, founding editor of the Brisbane Sun.

More than 75 years later, the cost of land is now more expensive and many residents cannot afford to purchase a home let alone build one themselves. Still, the town of Brisbane remains as hardworking and optimistic as ever.

Like Arthur Annis, city officials have looked for ways to further develop the area and provide affordable housing. They've developed relationships with affordable housing organizations, worked to preserve and rehabilitate affordable housing units, and tried to secure land as it becomes available.

One organization Brisbane developed a relationship with was Peninsula Habitat for Humanity. It started in the late 1990s when Peninsula Habitat for Humanity's Executive Director took former Brisbane Planning Commissioner, Carol Nelson, and the Assistant to the City Manager, Fred Smith, on a tour of Habitat's six-home, Hope Court development in Redwood City.
