Green Building

Peninsula Habitat Builds Green
Peninsula Habitat homes are built using green design and construction practices to conserve energy, water, and material resources and to take better care of our homeowners, volunteers and environment. Our homes incorporate a variety of green features, including engineered lumber which reduces the use of solid-sawn lumber, fiber cement siding which reduces the demand for cedar or redwood siding, energy efficient fixtures and appliances, green landscaping with drought-tolerant plants, low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints to improve overall air quality and help reduce respiratory illnesses, and waste recycling.
In addition, with support from the City of Brisbane, PG&E and GRID Alternatives, all seven of our new homes in Brisbane incorporate renewable solar energy. This is expected to provide a savings of approximately $30 per month in electricity bills for homeowners, or a total of $14,000 over the life of the system. Solar energy will also offset approximately 104,000 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions over the lifetime of each system.
