East Palo Alto Family Realizes American Dream
Through Peninsula Habitat For Humanity

Sharing a house with a group of twenty-something young adults is an adventure if you're in college or working at your first full-time job, but not if you're the Bloomquist family with three boys under the ages of six.
Up until several weeks ago, the Bloomquists lived in an East Palo Alto home owned by Bayshore Christian Ministries, which they shared with numerous volunteers every spring and summer for the past few years. During that time, the Bloomquists rarely experienced the simple pleasures of privacy, personal space or quiet time because they didn't have their own home.
Lance and Jena moved to East Palo Alto in 1994, and after 11 years of renting, they decided it was time to purchase their own home. Although not their first choice, the Bloomquists talked about moving out of East Palo Alto because they couldn't afford a house locally.
Then came the spring of 2005. Jena and Lance were leading Bayshore Christian Ministries' kids' Bible clubs and tutoring programs when they saw one of Peninsula Habitat for Humanity's flyers. Homes at the 24-unit Gloria Way condominium complex were available. The families previously living there sold their homes back to Peninsula Habitat for Humanity because they could afford to purchase regular market-rate homes.
While still in college, Jena volunteered at a Habitat for Humanity site in Oakland, California. "We knew of Habitat for Humanity," Jena said, "but we never thought we'd qualify for one of their houses."
