Stu Bacon
Construction Volunteer
Everyone wants to look back on his or her life with a sense of satisfaction that it was a life well lived and lived to the fullest. That epitomizes Peninsula Habitat volunteer Stu Bacon. Before retirement, Stu worked at a San Francisco legal publishing firm and now spends time focusing on family, photography and Peninsula Habitat for Humanity.
"I do a lot of photography and I love to travel with my wife to beautiful places in the West. But Habitat is what I selfishly call my 'give back.' I've had a wonderful life a good job, I worked with wonderful people, and I have a loving family. Now it's my chance to do a lot for other people," states Stu.
Stu came to Habitat with very little construction experience, but volunteering twice a week has changed that. He is now an expert at heating and ducting systems and the Habitat crew depends on him and the team of volunteers who work with him regularly.
"What I do now is totally unrelated to what I did in my working life, but I can say I'm much happier now," He sums up by saying, "I find Habitat has become my number one priority, and I try to plan my time around Tuesdays and Thursdays so I can go down to the site and help build the houses. It's very hard to put into words how good I feel about it - it is a highlight of my life!"
