With nearly 60 Habitat affiliates located throughout California, relocating to a new city does not have to mean the end of your association with Habitat for Humanity. Last November, Austin Sellery arrived at our doorstep from the Habitat affiliate in Pomona Valley. Having been involved with the Southern California affiliate for six years, Austin was anxious to continue volunteering and contacted Peninsula Habitat immediately. It was not long before Austin began working with Family Services and painting at our Rolison Road site. After meeting the staff, it was clear that with Austin's nine years of experience as School Superintendent for the San Mateo Union High School District and his understanding of the importance of fair and clearly-stated policies, he was the ideal volunteer to Chair Peninsula Habitat's Homeowner's Association Long-Term Maintenance Task Force.

"I wanted to continue to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity because its programs are important to every community," said Austin. "As an Educator and School Councilor, I'm often helping people solve problems, which is something I love to do and I'm happy to be able to continue doing so with Peninsula Habitat and its partner families."

Austin and the other 11 members of the Task Force are developing additional policies related to long-term maintenance of partner-family houses, while ensuring consistency with those already in place. Starting with the broad policies that will touch all locations and the surrounding neighborhood, through to those specific to each property, the team is working toward completing policy guidelines by year-end.

"The Peninsula is quite different from Pomona Valley, so this will be a new challenge for me, one that I'm looking forward to," said Austin of his new community. Please join Peninsula Habitat in welcoming Austin to his new home, both with us and on the Peninsula.
